My first teaching experience

I arrived to the classroom 10 minutes ago and  just 3  students  and Karla, my classmate  were  there.  I said hello to everone and inmediately I  start ordering the material I was prepared for my first teaching  time. I gave a piece of paper to  each student, in which they wrote their names to start making the first contact with them.  As they finished it,  they pasted it in a side of their desks. I was a little nervous while students were talking their personal topics. The teacher arrived to the classroom, and  I gave her my agenda. I had already written  in the board the date, objective and the activities I   planned.
I started developing the warm up, "the hunter, the rabbit and the wall." I gave the directions to the students, and  I saw them developing  it with a lot of enthusiasm and funny. So, it increased my personal  confidence ir order to continue with my agenda. Unfortunately, something that made a pause with the activity was the students that entered later to the class when the activity had already started. But it was my first challenge I had to face and I included them to become part of the game. Some students asked me by new words they did not understand  and I had to explained them using synonims to clarify their doubts.

Before to present the grammar topic I decided to use flashcards to prepare students’ attention in what we had to work.  However, it was so confused for some students to understand  the directions correctly. while other students were distracted checking their  cellphones So, I made a pause and asked them,  If I could continue with the class, and I started passing the flashcards and they had to continue repeating the sentences. Unfortunately, there were students that did not say the sentences completelly.   Finally, I started presenting the grammar topic, it was not too easy because I did not have enough time. but I gave them some examples because the time was running out and, I  had more activities to develop. I hope to do better in my next teaching practicum and achieve all my expectations,

  1. Hello, Ruben! I also consider that students who get late to the classroom is a problem, but you need to think about that beforehand because we never know when that will happen. I consider that you also need to write the directions on paper the day before and think whether they are understandable for students or they need to be short. Well done!

  3. Hello Ruben! I am glad that you did your first class. It is very stressful that students arrive late to the class because as a teacher it is very difficult give directions correctly the first time and then, repeat the directions for a second time it is not an easy job. The fact that you used flashcards was amazing because you catched the students' attention inmediately. I wish you the best for your next classes!!

  4. Hey, i like he idea you gave them pieces of paper to write their names, that always work when you need a volunteer for an activity, you can call them by their names. I know the first class is the hardest, but you did it great!

  5. Nice to read about your first experience when teaching Ruben. I think you could implement more monitoring time, so that all your students work in the activity you are doing with them. Cool!!
